How to keep your cat off your computer keyboard

By David Galloway
Lifehacker

Does your cat love to sit on your desk (or computer) while you're trying to work or go on MMORPG raids? Reddit user rimcrimp suggests using a board game box to give your cat a home on your workspace.

Cats love boxes. If your cat wants to sit near you while working and isn't content to stay on the ground you can keep your feline friend from knocking stuff over by giving him or her their own space. Just flip a board game box upside down or any other similarly-sized boxes will work. Your cat will love you even more if you can find a way to place that box in sunlight.

Grandal's first 2 hits for HRs make history

Associated Press Sports

updated 11:01 p.m. ET June 30, 2012

DENVER (AP) - Yasmani Grandal stepped off the plane and made baseball history.

Grandal, called up from Triple-A before Saturday's game, homered from both sides of the plate for his first two hits in the majors and led the San Diego Padres to an 8-4 win over the Colorado Rockies.

"I can't describe how remarkable this is," Grandal said. "Just getting the call-up was surreal. To get called up and hit two home runs for my first two hits, it's just incredible."

It was the first time a player has homered from both sides of the plate for his first two major league hits, according to the Padres, with information supplied from Elias Sports Bureau.

Alexi Amarista, who hit a grand slam Thursday in Houston for his first big league homer, connected in consecutive innings for the Padres.

Grandal, who had one at-bat in his debut four weeks ago, flew out to right in the second before he hit a solo home run in the fourth off Christian Friedrich.

He said after fouling a ball off his foot in the second he felt zoned in on Friedrich's delivery.

"I told (hitting coach Phil) Plantier, `Don't worry, I'm pretty sure I've got this guy,"' Grandal said. "You could see his fastball. If you looked for it you could hit it. He made a mistake and he left it up and I put a good swing on it."

Grandal sent a two-run shot in the sixth into the left-field bleachers off Jeremy Guthrie (3-7) for a 3-2 lead.

"I didn't think that ball was going to go out at all," Grandal said. "I thought it hit the fence so I slowed down coming into second and then I saw (Carlos) Quentin stop."

The two homers were a nice birthday present for manager Bud Black, who turned 55 on Saturday. Black is 5-0 on his birthday and 3-0 against the Rockies.

"I'll take it," Black said. "I've seen a lot of debuts, but this has to rank up there with some of the best. You don't hit two homers in your first major league start. It was very impressive."

The Rockies were impressed with Grandal's debut.

"He's a big, strong kid and he just flicked his hands on it and it went way out," Friedrich said. "I was wondering why we didn't have video on him. It's because it's his first game."

Amarista homered to lead off the seventh inning before the Padres broke it open in the eighth off Adam Ottavino, scoring four times for an 8-2 lead. Cameron Maybin hit an RBI single with two outs and Amarista followed with a three-run homer.

"Amarista, following up on the grand slam Thursday and today two homers, he's swinging the bat well," Black said. "He got a couple of pitches in his zone and he didn't miss them."

Edinson Volquez (5-7) gave up one earned run and three hits in six innings and Chris Denorfia added three hits for the Padres.

Wilin Rosario homered for the Rockies. Jordan Pacheco had an RBI single and Chris Nelson a run-scoring double in the eighth for Colorado.

The Rockies had just two hits through the first five innings but led 2-1. Rosario tied it at 1 when he led off the fifth with his 13th homer of the season. Pinch hitter Eric Young walked and scored when Grandal, the catcher, overthrew Dexter Fowler's sacrifice bunt.

Volquez worked hard to hold the Rockies down, walking six and striking out eight. He escaped two jams by getting Carlos Gonzalez to ground into double plays.

"He pitched well," Black said. "The only hiccup were the base on balls."

Friedrich, working within the 75-pitch limit dictated by Colorado's four-man rotation, allowed just one run and five hits and struck out five in five innings. His only mistake was Grandal's homer in the fourth.

"It's how I'm supposed to pitch. I need to hit the zone, especially with this new pitch count," Friedrich said.

NOTES: To make room for Grandal, the Padres optioned C Nick Hundley to Triple-A Tucson. ... Gonzalez extended his hitting streak to nine games with a single in the eighth. ... Rockies RHP Juan Nicasio (left hamstring strain) threw 45 pitches in a simulated game. The team will decide Sunday on the next step in the pitcher's rehab schedule. ... The Padres will send RHP Kip Wells (0-1) to the mound Sunday while the Rockies are expected to recall LHP Drew Pomeranz (0-2) from Triple-A to start for them.

IBM Labs pitches the future of augmented reality shopping with mobile app prototype

From the same company that brought you the ThinkPad and the tank of a keyboard known as the Model M, today IBM is demonstrating its latest consumer development: a mobile shopping app. As odd as that sounds, it's no secret that Big Blue employs some rather brilliant folk, and now the company is looking to combine augmented reality with your everyday shopping habits. While still merely a prototype, the app will allow consumers to pan product aisles with their smartphone camera and view additional details on the screen. As IBM puts it, shoppers may input their own needs and preferences into the app, which can accommodate a wealth of information such as allergens, sugar content and bio-degradable packaging. Through partnerships with retailers, IBM also hopes to integrate promotions and loyalty schemes into the app, which it states will help stores better understand the buying habits of individual consumers. So there you have it, the future of shopping, as brought to you by IBM. As for the full PR, you'll find it after the break.

Suicide by poison suspected in Ariz. court death

PHOENIX (AP) ? As the word "guilty" filled the silence of a Phoenix courtroom, defendant Michael Marin closed his eyes, put his head in his hands and appeared to put something in his mouth. He then took a swig from a sports bottle.

Minutes later, the 53-year-old Marin was dead.

Now investigators are trying to confirm their suspicion that Marin popped a poison pill after the jury found him guilty of arson, a bizarre ending to a case that began in 2009 when he emerged from his burning mansion in scuba gear.

Prosecutors said he torched his home when he couldn't keep up with the payments. Marin, an attorney and father of four, faced seven to 21 years in prison.

"This is one of the strangest cases I've seen in a long time," said Jeff Sprong, a spokesman with the Maricopa County sheriff's office. "We're hoping to find out exactly what he was thinking and exactly what he took."

Detectives will get the liquid from the sports drink tested for poisons. An autopsy was being conducted Friday to determine if any poison was in Marin's system, but results weren't expected to be released for months.

Marin's four grown children, who live in Arizona, did not return requests for comment, nor did his attorney, Andrew Clemency, or prosecutor Chris Rapp.

Marin, a former Wall Street trader, had summited Everest and wrote on his Facebook page that he had scaled six of the world's seven tallest mountains. He also was an art collector who had original Picassos.

Prosecutors painted him as a desperate man who had $50 in his bank account in July 2009, down from $900,000 a year earlier. He also had a monthly mortgage payment on the mansion of $17,250 and an upcoming balloon payment of $2.3 million.

Marin also owed $2,500 a month on a different home and owed $34,000 in taxes, prosecutors said.

On July 5, 2009, Marin told investigators that he escaped a blaze in his 10,000-sqaure-foot mansion in a posh part of Phoenix using a rope ladder and wearing scuba gear to avoid inhaling smoke.

Fire investigators later determined that the blaze was intentionally set. As Marin was led off to jail, he told reporters that he was innocent and "utterly shocked" that he was being arrested.

On Thursday, a jury found Marin guilty of a felony count of arson of an occupied structure.

After the verdict, he appeared to put something in his mouth, according to video footage. Soon after, a bright-red Marin coughed, reached for a tissue, buried his face in his hands and appeared to sob, The Arizona Republic reported.

Marin then began making noises that sounded like snores and whoops as he began convulsing and fell on the floor face-first, according to the newspaper.

Sprong, the sheriff's spokesman, said an investigator in the courtroom tried to resuscitate Marin. He was pronounced dead soon after at a hospital. Sprong said the department planned to interview his family and search his home.

Records show that other defendants found guilty of arson of an occupied structure, on top of other serious charges and when other people's lives were at risk, have received more lenient sentences than the one Marin faced.

For instance, a Phoenix man was sentenced to 10 years in prison and three years' probation after being convicted on charges that included arson of an occupied structure. Prosecutors said he endangered 12 people, including six children.

Franklin Zimring, a law professor at the University of California, Berkeley, who specializes in criminal sanctions, said a sentence up to 21 years in prison seemed overly long in Marin's case.

"What makes the potential sentence both seem quite long and seem, in some sense, inappropriate is that the life that was put at risk was that of the offender," he said.

Zimring said Marin likely would have been eligible for a shorter sentence had he agreed to a plea deal.

Jerry Cobb, a spokesman for the Maricopa County attorney's office, said talks about a plea deal had broken down and the case moved to trial. He could not say which side was more responsible for the breakdown.

Cobb said that after Marin was convicted, prosecutors would have sought a harsher sentence for him, anywhere between 10 1/2 and 21 years in prison.

Among Marin's last posts on Facebook, in November 2009, was a photo of his four children that said there was something more important to him than his Everest conquest.

"More than anything else I may have accomplished in this life, this is what really matters to me: the blessing of knowing the amazing individuals I am privileged to call my children," he wrote.
