Doris Day wins L.A. film critics' lifetime honor (Reuters)

LOS ANGELES (TheWrap.com) ? Doris Day has been named recipient of the Los Angeles Film Critics Association's 2011 Career Achievement Award, the critics group announced on Saturday.

"Decades on from the main body of her work, Doris Day is still arguably the template to which Hollywood turns when trying to quantify and capture 'girl-next-door' appeal," said LAFCA president Brent Simon in a release announcing the honor.

"Equally at home in snappish romantic comedies and more dramatic fare, Day was the biggest female star of the 1960s, giving a series of delightfully perceptive performances."

Day has often been a subject of speculation when the Academy meets to choose its honorary Oscar winners, though she has a long-running and well-known reluctance to attend ceremonies.

The association also announced that it will vote for the winners of its 2011 awards on Sunday, December 11. While the New York Film Critics Circle, which usually chooses its winners the day after the Los Angeles critics, decided to move its voting into November, LAFCA opted not to change its voting date.

Flashback: What If the U.S. Government Paid Off Its Debt? (The Motley Fool)

The current projections for U.S. government debt are grim. According to the Congressional Budget Office, national debt held by the public will hit $18 trillion in 2021, up from about $10 trillion today. As a percentage of GDP, public debt is forecast to go from 69% today to 84% by 2035.

Most Americans are all too aware of these numbers. In an NBC/Wall Street Journal poll earlier this year, eight in 10 said they were worried about the national debt. In July, a Gallup survey showed 42% of Americans were against raising the debt ceiling.

But it's easy to forget how different the outlook was just 10 years ago. Back then, the government was running record surpluses, and was forecast to repay all public debt by 2012. In his 2001 State of the Union speech, President George W. Bush minced no words: "I hope you will join me to pay down $2 trillion in debt during the next 10 years," he said. "At the end of those 10 years, we will have paid down all the debt that is available to retire."

That never happened, of course. But interestingly, the prospect created almost as much angst as today's record deficits.

Planet Money, part of NPR, recently obtained "a secret government report" through the Freedom of Information Act. The report, titled "Life After Debt" (you can see it here) is dated November 2000, and goes through a list of problems the government anticipated it would face once it repaid all of its debts.

The Federal Reserve in particular worried how it would conduct monetary policy. The Fed normally buys and sells Treasury securities to influence interest rates. What would it do once there were no more Treasuries to buy?

One idea was that rather than using Treasuries, the Fed could buy and sell private assets like CDOs. The report writes:

The Fed, if granted authorization could use private securities to conduct monetary policy.Private institutions could provide a relatively sanitary solution to the Fed' s problem of replacing Treasury securities in the conduct of monetary policy by creating new, very low-risk securities constructed from a pool of private debt securities. Such securities would be packaged in a way similar to mortgage-based securities currently issued by ... Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae...

If you're familiar with the genesis of the housing bubble, this should make you shudder. The housing market took a fatal turn when Wall Street began packaging "very low-risk securities" into collateralized-debt obligations, rating them triple-A, and selling them to global investors who had an insatiable appetite for the products. How much worse would the bubble have been if the Fed were a major buyer of private CDOs early in the decade? It's almost incomprehensible to think.

The Fed didn't have to stop at CDOs, of course. As the report notes, "In principle, the Fed can conduct open market operations on any number of assets including corporate bonds, agency debt, sovereign debt, and even equities." More bubbles to be blown -- particularly in stocks, since the report was issued in 2000, during the dot-com bubble.

And then there's the federal government itself. Ten years ago, the government was on track to run budget surpluses as far as the eye could see. If those surpluses couldn't be used to pay off debt, where would the money go?

One idea was for the government to start buying up private assets. The report calls this "accumulating a federal asset." "Other governments have pursued a strategy of investing in equities and other financial market offerings, domestically and internationally," it writes.

The obvious problem with this idea: Whose stock do you buy? If you thought the Solyndra scandal was bad, just wait. "Of course significant and legitimate concern revolves around governments' ability to passively invest sizable sums in private ventures," the report notes. In 2001, then-Federal Reserve Chairman Alan Greenspan argued against buying up private assets for the same reason. "It would be exceptionally difficult to insulate the government's investment decisions from political pressures," he said.

Ironically, the government did end up buying hundreds of billions of dollars' worth of private assets, but for a very different reason: The 2008 bailouts left taxpayers with huge stakes in General Motors (NYSE: GM - News), Bank of America (NYSE: BAC - News), Citigroup (NYSE: C - News), JPMorgan Chase (NYSE: JPM - News), and hundreds of other companies.

There's one big lesson to take away from all of this: If we were so spectacularly unable to foresee the future of our public finances 10 years ago, why do pretend like we can see it today? Today's estimates of future deficits mentioned at the beginning of this article are based on the same methodology as the ones used 10 years ago. Yet while we laugh at the dismal track record of pasts forecasts, we tend to take current ones very seriously.

That makes me wonder: What widely accepted forecasts are people making today that be will comically wrong 10 years from now? There's no way of knowing -- only that it's bound to happen.

Stock futures rally on euro zone deal (Reuters)

NEW YORK (Reuters) ? Stock index futures rose sharply on Thursday after European leaders agreed to boost the region's bailout fund and struck a deal with private banks and insurers to accept 50 percent losses on Greek bonds.

* Reached after more than eight hours of hard-nosed talks between bankers, heads of state and the International Monetary Fund, the agreement also foresees a recapitalization of hard-hit European banks and a leveraging of the bloc's rescue fund to give it firepower of 1.0 trillion euros ($1.4 trillion).

* S&P 500 futures rose 26 points and were far above fair value, a formula that evaluates pricing by taking into account interest rates, dividends and time to expiration on the contract. Dow Jones industrial average futures soared 203 points, and Nasdaq 100 futures jumped 48.5 points.

* European shares advanced 3.3 percent to hit a 12-week high after the Europe deal, led by banking shares.

* Also on investors' agenda will be third-quarter U.S. gross domestic product, coming at 8:30 a.m. EDT. A Reuters survey of economists forecast a 2.5 percent annual pace of growth, compared with a 1.3 percent annual rate in the second quarter.

* Other macroeconomic data Thursday includes weekly jobless claims and the Chicago Fed Midwest Manufacturing Index for September also at 8:30 a.m. EDT. A Reuters survey predicted 400,000 initial jobless claims, down from 403,000 in the previous week.

* September U.S. pending home sales come at 10 a.m. EDT and are seen rising 0.1 percent from a fall of 1.2 percent in the previous reading.

* In an early earnings report, Dow Chemical Co (DOW.N) narrowly missed quarterly profit expectations as cost increases dented demand in Europe and North America.

* Exxon Mobil Corp (XOM.N) was to report earnings later in the day.

* In corporate news, Research in Motion Ltd (RIM.TO) (RIMM.O) has been sued by BlackBerry users in the United States and Canada for service outages that hit devices earlier this month.

* American International Group Inc (AIG.N) plans to sell about half its stake in AIA Group Ltd (1299.HK), the Asian life insurer it took public last year, the Wall Street Journal reported, citing sources.

Police admit mix-up with Winehouse inquest info

(AP) ? British police say there has been a slight mix-up ahead of an inquest into the death of soul diva Amy Winehouse.

Scotland Yard said Tuesday that "material relating to a forthcoming inquest" into Winehouse's death was delivered to an incorrect address.

The force declined to elaborate on the nature of the material but said it has been recovered. Inquiries are ongoing into how it ended up in the wrong place.

Police said the mix-up will not delay the reopening Wednesday of the inquest into Winehouse's death.

Winehouse, who had fought drug and alcohol problems for years, was found dead in bed at her London home on July 23 at age 27.

An initial autopsy proved inconclusive. The inquest was previously adjourned with no cause of death.

Study shows Alzheimer's disease-related peptides form toxic calcium channels in the plasma membrane

Study shows Alzheimer's disease-related peptides form toxic calcium channels in the plasma membrane

Monday, October 24, 2011

Alzheimer's disease is triggered by the inappropriate processing of amyloid precursor protein to generate excess amounts of short peptide fragments called A-beta. For many years, the neurodegeneration associated with Alzheimer's disease was thought to be caused by the buildup of A-beta in insoluble, fibrous plaques. However, increasing suspicion now falls on smaller, soluble A-beta complexes as the toxic form of the protein, partly through their ability to induce excess calcium influx into cells, which disrupts synaptic signaling and stimulates cell death. A new study in The Journal of Cell Biology uses high-resolution imaging to reveal that A-beta oligomers elevate calcium by forming calcium-permeable pores in the plasma membrane.

A-beta oligomers could induce calcium influx by physically disrupting the cell's outer membrane or by activating endogenous calcium channels. But studies have also shown that A-beta peptides can form calcium-permeable pores themselves in both artificial and cell membranes. A limitation of experimental techniques used to date, says Angelo Demuro, from the University of California, Irvine, is that they only monitor the activity of one or two channels at a time. In addition, different groups have obtained disparate results regarding the properties of A-beta channels using this approach.

To overcome these problems, Demuro and colleagues developed an alternative method to measure the activity of calcium channels in living cells. "We can simultaneously record the behavior of thousands of channels using an imaging technique we call optical patch-clamping," Demuro explains. In this approach, frog eggs are filled with a calcium-sensitive dye, and the researchers observe the part of the cell nearest to the cell's outer membrane. When membrane channels open to let calcium into the cell, small fluorescent flashes indicate the duration and extent of calcium influx at each individual pore.

Demuro et al. found that, just twenty minutes after A-beta oligomers were added to the eggs, they displayed flickering spots of fluorescence signifying calcium influx through single membrane channels. This influx was unlikely to be through endogenous channels activated by A-beta because frog eggs barely express calcium channels of their own. Moreover, A-beta aggregates weren't simply disrupting the eggs' membrane, as the influx was inhibited by zinc ions, which block calcium-permeable pores.

A-beta oligomers therefore form calcium-permeable channels of their own in the membrane. Demuro and colleagues characterized the properties of these pores by simultaneously imaging the activity of thousands of channels in a single membrane region. "They are all different," says Demuro. "[The pores] show a wide variety of behaviors." Most pores opened infrequently and only let in small amounts of calcium, but some opened more often and channeled large amounts of calcium into the cell. Though few in number, Demuro et al.'s measurements suggest that this latter type of pore may be largely responsible for the toxic increase in cytoplasmic calcium levels.

Differences in the properties of individual pores may be caused by differences in the number of A-beta peptides assembled into each channel, with higher-order oligomers forming the more active species of pore. "It would be nice to visualize how many A-beta peptides each pore has and whether this is related to the activity of the channel," Demuro says. If pore activity is affected by the oligomerization state of A-beta, it appears that A-beta peptides continue to assemble after their insertion into membranes, as the pores became more active as eggs were exposed to A-beta oligomers for longer periods. This increase in calcium influx over time may be related to the gradual progression of Alzheimer's symptoms.

Beyond Alzheimer's disease, Demuro et al.'s approach may help explain the pathogenesis of other neurodegenerative disorders like Parkinson's and Huntington's disease, in which misfolded and aggregated proteins have also been reported to form calcium-permeable channels.

Judge considers DNA tests for convicted killer (AP)

HOUSTON ? Just weeks away from execution, a Texas death row inmate is asking the courts to force prosecutors to turn over knives and clothing that were never tested for DNA, claiming that the evidence could show he didn't kill his girlfriend and her sons nearly two decades ago.

But prosecutors say the latest request from Henry Watkins Skinner, who came within an hour of lethal injection last year before the U.S. Supreme Court stepped in, is an empty tactic to again delay his death.

Both sides will argue their case Monday in Amarillo before federal Magistrate Judge Clinton Averitte. The hearing comes after the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that Skinner could ask for the untested evidence, but left unresolved whether those items had to be surrendered by Gray County District Attorney Lynn Switzer.

The ruling came in a federal lawsuit that Skinner filed against Switzer, claiming the state violated his civil rights by withholding access to the evidence. Prosecutors want the lawsuit tossed, while defense attorneys are asking Averitte to delay ruling on the federal suit until the DNA testing issue is decided at the state-court level.

Skinner, 49, is scheduled for execution Nov. 9.

Skinner was sentenced to death for the 1993 deaths of his girlfriend, 40-year-old Twila Busby, and her sons Elwin "Scooter" Caler, 22, and Randy Busby, 20. The victims were strangled, beaten or stabbed on New Year's Eve at their home in Pampa in the Texas Panhandle.

About three hours after their bodies were discovered, police found Skinner hiding in a closet in the home of a woman he knew. Tests showed that blood of at least two victims was on him, and authorities said a trail of blood led police from the bodies to his hiding place a few blocks away.

Skinner has acknowledged being inside the house where the killings took place but has insisted he couldn't be the murderer because he was passed out on a couch from a mix of vodka and codeine. In a hand-written Aug. 31 affidavit, Skinner told the court: "I am actually, factually and totally, legally and any other definition, innocent of this crime."

The evidence now being sought was not tested at the time of Skinner's trial because his lawyer feared the results would hurt his case. But his attorneys now argue that forensic DNA testing "has a strong likelihood of confirming Mr. Skinner's claim."

The untested evidence includes vaginal swabs taken from Busby during an autopsy, fingernail clippings, a knife found on the porch of Busby's house, a second knife found in a plastic bag in the house, a towel with the second knife and a jacket next to Busby's body.

Skinner contends that Caler, who had several stab wounds, likely bled on him while trying to roust him from his stupor. Skinner has said the woman's blood likely got on his clothes because they were nearby as she was being bludgeoned with a pickax handle. He and his attorneys point to the woman's now-deceased uncle, Robert Donnell, as the possible killer.

Skinner's lawyers have already asked the state courts to delay the execution and want Averitte to withhold any decision on the federal lawsuit until a request for DNA testing before Skinner's trial court ? the third such request from Skinner ? is resolved there. Defense attorneys also argue that a new state law allows DNA testing of evidence even if the offender chose not to seek testing before trial.

Prosecutors contend the DNA request is a delay tactic, saying Skinner's claims about the evidence aren't new and that other courts have already decided the issue. The Texas Attorney General's Office, in its written arguments, said the new state law still blocks additional DNA testing in Skinner's case.

"It is the responsibility of this court to close the door on the dilatory and piecemeal litigation tactics that Skinner has deployed, and establish a precedent that will deter other death row inmates (and their lawyers) from following Skinner's example," Texas Solicitor General Jonathan Mitchell wrote to the court.

In iPhone 4S speed marathon, Sprint finishes last (Appolicious)

The iPhone marathon finally can be run with all the major players now that Sprint has joined the other big boys, AT&T and Verizon Wireless, in offering an iPhone for the first time.

In its ads, Sprint claims ?blazing speed? and unlimited data. Maybe the unlimited data part is true, but the blazing part is in dispute.

Several sites ran speed tests for the iPhone 4S, which went on sale on sale for the Big Three on Friday. Generally, but not always, Sprint finished last.

Charles Starrett at iLounge reported: ?AT&T has a significant edge in 3G cellular data speeds and believes that customers will need to wait for LTE-supporting iPhones before Sprint and Verizon will be able to bridge the gap.?

iLounge found in Buffalo, NY, that AT&T had the fastest data speeds, between 2.41 and 2.99 Mbps for downloads and 0.68 to 0.81 on the uploads.

With one exception, Verizon beat Sprint. Verizon had download speed ranging between 0.55 and 0.69 for downloads and 0.04 to 0.26 Mpbs for uploads, Sprint ran 0.33 to 0.58 Mpbs for the downs and 0.11 to 0.22 Mpbs on the ups.

Brent Rose at Gizmodo tested iPhone 4S along with some Android phones running true 4G, Gizmodo said: ?No surprise, perhaps, the 4G phones massacred the iPhones, beating them by nearly 1,000 percent. AT&T's faster theoretical speeds with its iPhone 4S are indeed faster in real life, beating Verizon and Sprint on the iPhone 4S.?

Don?t rule out Sprint, though. Gizmodo said: ?Sprint seems to average out the best of the iPhone 4Ses, with the second fastest downloads and fastest upload. Plus you get unlimited data. If all you care about is downstream and you've got good AT&T service, that's going to be your best bet.?

Still, speed may not be everything, CNET concludes in its review of Sprint?s 4S: ?Call quality on the Sprint model is admirable, and the data speeds, while certainly not 4G, get the job done.?

Cain loses campaign mouthpiece (Politico)

Herman Cain is ending the best week of his campaign by losing his communications director, CNN is reporting.

From their story:

Ellen Carmichael told CNN on Saturday her decision is firm but not yet finalized.

"I have resigned but the paperwork's not final," Carmichael said.

Carmichael explained her decision is a personal one and that she's pursuing other professional opportunities. She also said that her assistant, Francis Boustany, is also leaving out of allegiance to Carmichael.

CNN asked Carmichael about the Republican presidential candidate's reaction to her departure. Carmichael is well known to the political press corps as a reliable and responsible promoter of Cain's message. She was recently recognized at a CNN event as part of a new generation of newsmakers. And Cain has often publicly praised Carmichael.

"It's a very amicable departure," Carmichael said. "He wished me the best of luck. And I will forever be fond of him and appreciative of this opportunity."

In June, two other staffers left the Cain campaign. CNN asked Carmichael if her and Boustany's departures are a sign of more trouble for Cain.

"No comment," she said.

Cain has generally had a winging-it approach to his campaign, but that's harder and harder to do with a dwindling team.

Redesigned SUVs Mean Crashes Aren't as Deadly, Says IIHS

Just the Facts:
 • Redesigned front ends mean that SUVs and pickup trucks pose far less of a deadly risk to people in cars and minivans than before, according to a study released on Wednesday by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.
 • More compatible designs mean that "SUVs aren't the safety concern they once were," the study said.
 • SUVs were involved in crashes that killed car/minivan occupants at a rate of 44 deaths per million registered vehicle years in 2000-'01. That rate dropped by nearly two-thirds to 16 in 2008-'09.

ARLINGTON, Virginia ? Redesigned front ends mean that SUVs and pickup trucks pose far less of a deadly risk to people in cars and minivans than before, according to a study released on Wednesday by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.

More compatible designs mean that "SUVs aren't the safety concern they once were," the study said.

SUVs were involved in crashes that killed car/minivan occupants at a rate of 44 deaths per million registered vehicle years in 2000-'01. That rate dropped by nearly two-thirds to 16 in 2008-'09.

"The researchers attribute much of the change to two things: improved crash protection in the cars and minivans, thanks to side airbags and stronger structures, and newer designs of SUVs and pickups that align their front-end energy-absorbing structures with those of cars," the study said.

Researchers were careful to note that the study results don't contradict the "basic physics of crashes."

"Size and weight are still key, and a small, lightweight vehicle is going to fare worse than a big, heavy vehicle in a crash," it said. "In general, SUVs and pickups are heavier than cars, so in that sense different types of vehicles always will be mismatched. But the study shows that, beyond weight, differences in vehicle styles don't have to be a safety problem."

The IIHS says that recently calculated driver death rates for 2005-'08 models show that drivers of SUVs are among the least likely to die in a crash, largely because of electronic stability control.

Inside Line says: Maybe you don't have to be so paranoid about sharing the road with an SUV now.
