JOHANNESBURG (AP) ? Former South African President Nelson Mandela was hospitalized for a test to determine what is behind an undisclosed stomach ailment, and the country's current leader said the much beloved 93-year-old icon was in no danger.
Mandela, a Nobel peace laureate who spent 27 years in prison for fighting racist white rule, has officially retired and last appeared in public in July 2010. He became South Africa's first black president in 1994 and served one five-year term.
Mandela "has had a long-standing abdominal complaint and doctors feel it needs proper specialist medical attention," President Jacob Zuma said in a statement Saturday morning, asking that Mandela's privacy be respected.
In a follow-up statement later, Zuma added that Mandela had undergone a planned, undisclosed "diagnostic procedure."
Mandela "is fine and fully conscious and the doctors are satisfied with his condition, which they say is consistent with his age," Zuma said. "We are happy that he is not in any danger."
Zuma said Mandela was expected to be discharged from the hospital Sunday or Monday.
The statements did not say at which hospital Mandela was being treated, apparently to protect his privacy, but that did not stop journalists from camping out at a military hospital in the capital, Pretoria, on the chance he might be there. In 2011, Mandela spent a few days in a private Johannesburg hospital with an acute respiratory infection.
The South African military, which took charge of Mandela's health care after he was hospitalized last year, and a spokesman for Mandela's office said they would have no statement Saturday.
ANC spokesman Keith Khoza said Zuma's office also had reassured ANC officials.
Mandela "just had abdominal pains for some time now and the doctors decided a while ago that perhaps they should admit him, with a view to check those abdominal pains, so it wasn't an emergency admission," Khoza told reporters. "He's fine, he's in good health."
Well-wishers like Derek Kemper, a 47-year-old emergency services consultant, said they hoped Mandela would soon recover.
Kemper said he fought the ANC as a soldier for the apartheid state. On Saturday, Kemper was touring Soweto, the famed Johannesburg township set aside for blacks under apartheid and still largely black and poor, with a group of other whites. Kemper marveled at how far the country had come, and credited Mandela.
"He had the wisdom to try to reunite the country." Kemper said, speaking in front of a Soweto home where Mandela once lived that has been turned into a museum celebrating Mandela's life.
Kemper said he believed that even though Mandela has largely retired from public life, he has a moderating influence on younger black South Africans who may be impatient with the pace of change in a country where the black majority remains poor. Kemper said he worried about whether the commitment to reconciliation would outlive Mandela.
But Kefiloe Molepo, a 19-year-old student who grew up just around the corner from Mandela's home, said there was little cause for concern. Molepo, walking home from church, said he was raised on stories about Mandela, who he said was a friend of his great-grandfather.
"When he was set free, he didn't think of vengeance," Molepo said. "He wanted peace for the nation."
In 1993, after white extremists killed Chris Hani, a black leader who at the time was second only to Mandela in popularity, Mandela went on national television to call for calm. Mandela wrote later that he was among those who feared Hani's death would spark a race war, and his measured words were credited with averting further violence.
Today, white extremists have been largely sidelined. And black militants like Julius Malema, head of the ANC's youth wing, grab headlines but struggle to draw crowds.
Christian Bohm, a 32-year-old Swedish telecommunications company employee who was visiting the Mandela museum Saturday, said Mandela had set an example for the world for how leaders can pursue justice.
"South Africa is very privileged to have had such a leader," said Bohm, comparing Mandela to India's Mahatma Gandhi.
Hassan Burma was visiting Soweto from South Sudan, Africa's newest nation.
South Sudan broke away from Sudan last year, and its leaders must now cope with the devastation of decades of civil war. Burma said Mandela has shown Africa has different possibilities.
"What he did wasn't just for South Africa," Burma said. "It is for all the African nations."
Mandela's public appearances have become increasingly rare, though he did appear at the closing ceremony of the World Cup in July 2010. Mandela also held a private meeting with Michelle Obama when the U.S. first lady traveled to South Africa with her daughters last year.
Mandela has taken up permanent residence at his home in Qunu, in the southwestern region of South Africa where he was raised. Earlier this year, Mandela came to his Johannesburg home for what Zuma's office said would be a brief stay while maintenance was done at his Qunu home. Zuma's office said then that Mandela was in good health.
Mandela's last surviving sibling, a sister, died last month near Qunu. Makhulu Nothusile Bhulehluthi was 82. Nkosi Mphakanyiswa Gadla Mandela, their father, had several wives and 31 children.

For instance, going for sweets and foods with high fat could in fact change the opiate receptors in your brain to dissipate you of endorphins. After you have low endorphin levels, you might be a lot less likely to work out and eat proper nutrition. Needless to say, if you are not exercising and eating well, one will not be elevating your endorphin levels, and this lower level will again leave you craving sweet and fatty foods, and so forth.
The secret of burning fat and healthy nutrition is to try to stick to nature as closely as is possible, when choosing your target weight loss foods. This implies choosing organic food where possible, and likewise choosing unrefined foods for example whole-wheat bread and brown rice, instead of their white and refined counterparts. A close cousin to the Editors' Choice Canon imageFormula P-150 Scan-tini ($295 direct, 4 stars), and one small step up in Canon's line, the Canon imageFormula P-215 Scan-tini Personal Document Scanner ($325 direct) combines a not quite identical scanner with improved software. The result is an even more attractive package, both as a portable scanner and as a small-size personal desktop scanner. It's also the new Editors' Choice for its category.
The P-215 is so similar to the P-150 that it's hard to see a difference. At 1.6 by 11.2 by 3.7 inches (HWD) and 2.2 pounds, it's just a little bigger (by 0.2 inches in one dimension), a little heavier (by 0.1 pound), and costs just a little more. However it's otherwise nearly identical, with a 20-page automatic document feeder (ADF), duplexing (the ability to scan both sides of a page simultaneously), and even the same claimed speed.
Canon rates both scanners in both grayscale and black and white modes at 15 pages per minute (ppm) for both simplex (one-sided) and duplex (two-sided) scans, and at 30 images per minute (ipm) for duplex (with one image on each side of the page). Color mode is a still reasonable 10 ppm and 20 ipm. Beyond that, the scanners share most of their specifications point for point. However, Canon says that the P-215 adds the ability to scan hard plastic cards, like embossed ID cards and driver licenses.
Setup
One welcome improvement for the P-215 is easier setup for the scanner itself. With the P-150 you had to install a part in the scanner by following confusing instructions. The P-215 comes out of the box ready to work. Setup can be as simple as connecting the supplied USB cable. However, you also have other choices.
The P-215 gets power over the same USB cable it uses for data. It can also get additional power from an optional AC power supply (although it's not available at this writing) or from a second supplied cable that plugs into the scanner's power supply connector on one end and a second computer USB port on the other. Canon says that using the power supply or second cable will boost scan speed, but I didn't see any difference in my tests. Given that different USB ports can supply different levels of power, you may or may not see a difference on your computer.
Software choices
You also have the option whether or not to install software. If you don't want to install any, you can use the Canon CaptureOnTouch Lite utility stored in the scanner's memory. Connect by USB cable, and the computer will see the memory as a USB drive. Depending on how your computer is set up, it will then either launch the utility automatically or let you run it manually.
Alternatively, you can install the full version of CaptureOnTouch, which gives you much more control over the scan settings. You can also install a Twain driver, which will let you scan directly from most Windows programs; Nuance PaperPort 11 for document management and optical character recognition (OCR); NewSoft Presto! BizCard 6 SE for scanning and managing business cards; and connectors for Google Docs, Evernote, and Microsoft Sharepoint.
The software installation is mostly standard. However, it suffers from the same issue as the installation program for the Canon imageFormula DR-C125 ($495 direct, 4 stars) that I recently reviewed. During installation, you need to choose between a Typical or Custom install. With most scanners, the Typical option would install everything. With the P-215, however, it installs only the driver, scan utility, and user manual.
As I pointed out in the DR-C125 review, these choices really should be labeled Minimal and With Programs. At the very least, there should be some additional information explaining what each choice installs. Without it you may well go ahead with the Typical choice and never know that there are other programs available or how to install them.
Choosing Software
I tested the P-215 on a system running Windows Vista and with all four setup options?using one cable and two in combination both with CaptureOnTouch Lite and with the full set of installed software. Adding the second connection made no difference in speed with either software choice. However, the software makes a noticeable difference in usability.
CaptureOnTouch Lite will let you scan to searchable PDF files as well as image PDF, JPG, BMP, and other image file formats. The full version of the utility adds much more control over scan settings, while PaperPort and BizCard 6 add document management, the ability to recognize text and save it in editable format, and the ability to scan and manage business cards. What this adds up to is that unless you have a very good reason not to, you should install the software on your hard disk.
Performance
The P-215 offers a 600 pixel per inch (ppi) optical resolution, which is much more than you need for document scanning. Its default setting is 200 ppi, which is generally sufficient. In my tests, using the default settings of 200 ppi and automatic color detection, scanning to a PDF file, and giving the scan command from PaperPort, a 10 page document in both simplex and duplex modes matched the claimed 10 ppm and 20 ipm for color scans, but took an extra 35 seconds to save the file, so the effective speed was 6.3 ppm and 12.6 ipm. That's an acceptable speed even for a personal desktop scanner. For a portable scanner it's blazingly fast.
Much more important is that the P-215 doesn't slow down when you scan directly to a searchable PDF file. Only a few other scanners, mostly from Canon, can manage this trick. The DR-C125, for example, doesn't slow down at all for text recognition, and the P-150 adds just a few seconds. In contrast, the Fujitsu ScanSnap S1300 ($295, 3.5 stars), like most scanners, takes a significant amount of extra time for text recognition, at 1 minute 43 seconds to scan 10 pages and save to an image file, compared with 2:37 to scan and recognize the text.
In addition to its fast scan speed, the P-215 scored well on our other tests also. Scanning to Word format, the combination of the scanner and PaperPort read our Times New Roman test page at sizes as small as 5 points and our Arial test page at sizes as small as 6 points without a mistake. Few scanners we've tested have done anywhere near as well for OCR accuracy.
Results for business cards were mixed. The scanner had trouble feeding stacks of cards, so I needed to manually feed some of them one at a time. The speed was also slow enough?at about 25 seconds per card?that a fast typist could do the job in less time than it takes to scan and then check the results. However, the accuracy was good enough to be useful, with errors on fewer than half of the cards, and most of those having only one or two errors.
Despite the lackluster results on our business card tests, the Canon imageFormula P-215 Scan-tini Personal Document Scanner is more than a little impressive. It's fast, particularly for scanning to searchable PDF format; it offers an ADF and duplexing; and its text recognition is unusually accurate. The combination makes it a standout winner, both as a capable personal desktop scanner and even more so as a portable scanner that doesn't force you to make compromises. By any measure, it's an easy pick for Editors' Choice.

Sarah Palin has criticized the 'lame-stream media' for making too much of Rick Santorum's 2008 statement that Satan is attacking America. But the media aren't the only ones concerned.?
Sarah Palin says the lame-stream media are getting all ?wee-weed up? about Rick Santorum?s Satan speech. By that, we believe she means the mainstream press is making too much of it. Is she right?
Skip to next paragraphWell, we?ll note here that the media gets wee-weed up about many subjects, because if they don?t, it can be very hard to stay awake during a slow news day. Mr. Santorum?s remarks were made four years ago, in a different context than a presidential race, and are easy to misinterpret if you have a dissimilar religious background.
But still ? let?s examine what Palin said in detail. On Sean Hannity?s Fox News show last night, she said that ?the lame-stream media is taking things out of context and trying to subscribe to [Santorum] that traditional type normal negative narrative that they want to pin on any conservative.?
Then she added: ?This is a speech he gave back in 2008 where he named evil as Satan. For those lame-stream media characters to get all wee-weed up about that, first you have to ask yourself, have they ever, ever attended Sunday school. Have they never heard this terminology before??
This is similar to the approach Santorum himself took yesterday. He, too, talks as if the issue is simply the use of the word ?Satan.?
?You know, I?m a person of faith,? Santorum said following a rally yesterday in Phoenix. ?I believe in good and evil. If think if somehow or another because you?re a person of faith [and] you believe in good and evil [that] is a disqualifier for president, we?re going to have a very small pool of candidates who can run for president.?
Here?s the problem with that: lots of members of the mainstream media went (or still go) to Sunday school. So did tens of millions of US voters. We are among them ? we?ll stack our Sunday school attendance against any former Alaska governor. The use of Satan as a symbol is something we?re heard many times before.
But what Santorum said is that academia had been overcome by Satan, as had the culture, politics, and mainstream American Protestant churches. He said those churches were ?in shambles.?
That is a statement Santorum will find difficult elide. Former Bush political director Karl Rove picked up on that right away during an appearance on the "O?Reilly Factor."
?Does he really think every Presbyterian, ever Methodist, every Lutheran, is really as a mainstream Protestant no longer a Christian?? Mr. Rove said to Fox News host Bill O?Reilly.
Meanwhile, Santorum?s campaign staff is getting worked up about reporters investigating aspects of their guy?s religious statements, while giving a pass to Mitt Romney and Newt Gingrich and Ron Paul.
?Why is [Mr. Romney?s] Mormonism off-limits?? a frustrated Santorum aide says in good piece on this subject by Washington Examiner political correspondent Byron York.

Of the 115 million American households in 2010, 6% were ?unmarried,? and close to 90% of these unmarried individuals were heterosexual while the other 10% were homosexual. With the numbers of unmarried couples on the rise, estate planners need to acquaint themselves with estate and financial planning techniques for unmarried couples.
An unmarried couples? financial and estate wishes may not be followed if family disputes arise and a proper estate plan is not in place. The rules and strategies that apply to unmarried couples differ from jurisdiction to jurisdiction. One of the best ways an estate planner can begin learning the different rules that apply to unmarried couples is to make a side-by-side comparison of how basic estate planning techniques affect married couples and unmarried couples differently. First off, you're just a sophomore. You have time! Though college students seem to be doing internships earlier and earlier, it's most common to start in your junior year. Schools with specific majors like film, television, screenwriting and journalism often have LA programs and/or internship databases with contact information, but these aren't vital to securing an internship. Also, if you're interested in news, you don't need to be in LA, since every decently-sized city has a news station. Even if your school were a bit more rural, you could plan your classes so that you could intern at a news station. I went to Ithaca College, and many of my friends traveled to Syracuse and Binghamton for broadcast news internships during the school year. A few were even working as on-air reporters by the time we graduated! You could also stick with summer internships in Atlanta. Generally internships run Jan-May, May-August or August-December, so you may find that companies have all the interns they need for the current semester right now. Start looking for a summer internship in April if you can. (It's too early to start looking for a summer one now.) Your lack of work experience shouldn't be too much of a problem, as long as you can interview well and write a solid, succinct cover letter. A part-time job will show prospective employers that you are reliable and can show up to work on time - but experience isn't essential (Remember that you're working for free). You can fill up your resume with college extracurriculars.
Here's how you can find an internship in film/TV/news:
Start looking for phone numbers/email addresses/people to contact. Since you're looking for an unpaid internship and not a job, you should be able to be a bit more picky. Think you where you'd like to intern (for example, what company released a movie you love? What local news station is your favorite?) and then see if you can find a phone number from their website, an industry directory, Google results, etc. Simply ask to speak with the person who handles internships and then ask if you can submit a resume. For film and TV productions (in a variety of locations), check out Production Weekly and the Production Reference Services report. For development internships, a free trial subscription to IMDBPro can be very helpful for companies in LA, as can the weekly UTA Joblist (which is widely distributed - see if someone can forward it to you). Check to see if your school has an internship database - but don't necessarily limit yourself to these places. Also, don't be surprised if your Career Services office is massively unhelpful...the entertainment industry is very specialized, and people outside of it don't seem to know much about how it works. A journalism professor might be more helpful than a Career Services person.
Check your alumni network. Many schools maintain an online alumni database that you can search based on profession. You'd be surprised how much mileage you can get out of "Hey, I went to Miami too!" My school's database also lets alumni check a box saying that they're willing to help current students and recent grads - so that's a good indication that your email is worth sending. You can also ask your professors about any recent grads they're still in touch with who may be able to help. Fellow classmates can help too. I actually got an internship in NYC through a contact from a younger classmate!
Apply online. Like with jobs, you will probably hear back from less than 2% of the internships you apply for online - but it's worth a shot. I got an internship at a studio genre label by applying through its website. Check the "Job Sites" section to the right of this blog and start searching for internships at those sites. The bigger ones (NBCUniversal, Time Warner, etc.) should have a few listed. Also, remember that many companies fall under the umbrella of larger companies - so click on Viacom to apply for internships at MTV, for example. Again, you may never hear back from these people...sometimes I think jobs and internships are posted online but not actually filled by online applicants - but I know first hand that it is at least possible to get an internship this way. In terms of following up - you can try once if you want, but after that you should let it go. Don't pester.
Consider an LA semester or summer program. I offer this advice with the caveat that they can be incredibly expensive and aren't absolutely necessary for an internship...but I probably never would have moved to LA without my school's LA's program. Especially if your school isn't a specialized communications school, an LA program can offer more specific classes and easier access to internship opportunities. During my semester in LA, I interned at two companies, wrote a pilot and wrote a feature. Productive, huh? Be wary of programs that aren't affiliated with real universities and ask yourself where your money is actually going...I don't want you moving to LA with a ton of debt since you probably won't be able to pay it back for a very long time. But if your parents are willing to help, and/or your school doesn't offer specific classes like screenwriting, an LA program might be worth looking into. Just know that you can definitely find an internship on your own without the help of a school.
You may want to focus your goals; The path to working in scripted television is very different from the path to working in television news. I suppose you could do a news internship this summer and a more scripted kind of internship the following summer to see what you like better...but at some point you will need to choose a path so you can start making contacts in the right field.
