Childhood Obesity Problems And SolutionsYour Health Journal ...

From The Examiner?..

As National School Lunch Week cooks down to an end on Friday Oct 19, organizers, schools nutritionist, and healthcare professionals across the county are hoping the key message of healthy eating is not forgotten. The issue of fighting childhood obesity is real and has taken a national spotlight. This week there was a Presidential Proclamation for School Lunch Week, and health studies were also released in conjunction with this week to discuss the dangers of childhood obesity.

Among those studies include one by the University of Southern California (USC Rossier). The USC Rossier study pulls together statistical information in an easy read slideshow called Understanding Childhood Obesity. Also click on this story?s slideshow to review the timely information about the state of childhood obesity in this nation. Some featured facts include: One in three children, between the ages of 2 ? 19, is overweight or obese. These numbers beg the question: How did we get to this youth healthcare crisis in 2012 when in 1975 the number of obese children was much lower? The study shows 5% of the nation?s children, ages 2 -19, were obese in 1975. The USC Rossier study reveals part of the problem as a combination of little physical exercise and lots of unhealthy foods.

Locally, school districts like Atlanta Public Schools and DeKalb County Schools have embraced solutions to end this problem by promoting goals like hands-on healthy eating. Both districts have connected students directly to eating freshly grown fruits and vegetables. Across Metro Atlanta, school districts are not sitting back watching students fall into serious health problems like diabetes and high blood pressure. Instead they have successful adopted new federal lunch standards, and are participating in student nutrition education programs.

Meg Whitman Outlines HP?s 5-Year Recovery Plan, Promises Growth By 2015

Growth 2015Hewlett-Packard was once the king of Silicon Valley. Not anymore. After years of executive turnover, the company has lost its soul although the money keeps pouring in. Meg Whitman intends to right the massive HP ship and just outlined an ambitious five-year plan that promises new products by financial year 2014 and finally growth by 2015. So three years from now. Gah. Whitman took over for ousted Leo Apotheker in September 2011. Apotheker replaced Mark Hurd in 2010. Today during HP's Securities Analyst Meeting Whitman blamed HP's current position on this constant turnover. She indicated it caused multiple inconsistent strategies. And she's right.

Bank site hackers used advanced botnets

21 hrs.

SAN FRANCISCO???The hackers behind the cyber attacks on major U.S. banks have repeatedly disrupted online banking by using sophisticated and diverse tools that point to a carefully coordinated campaign, according to security researchers.

The hackers, believed to be activists in the Middle East, were highly knowledgeable about the defensive equipment used by the banks and likely spent months on reconnaissance, said several researchers interviewed by Reuters, who viewed the assaults as among the strongest and most complex the world has seen to date.

In the past two weeks, customers of top U.S. banks including Bank of America, JPMorgan Chase & Co, Wells Fargo & Co, U.S. Bancorp and PNC Financial Services have reported having trouble accessing their websites, as unusually high traffic volumes appeared to crash or slow down the systems.

No thefts have been tied to hacked sites, but an untold number of customers were not able to pay bills or transfer money from their computers, leaving banks with remediation expenses and customer irritation as the biggest costs.

Researchers said the hackers used groups of compromised computers, known as botnets, which are inexpensive to rent for short periods. What made these botnets much more powerful was that they were made up of Web servers that had been taken over, instead of mere personal computers.

"Tens of thousands" of servers are involved, said Tom Kellermann, vice president of major security vendor Trend Micro.

The FBI declined to comment on its investigation of the attacks. The banks either declined to comment or noted that most customers have been able to log into their accounts.

"It's fairly large, but it's something financial institutions are accustomed to dealing with," said Doug Johnson, vice president of the American Bankers Association trade group.

Sources familiar with the bank attacks have previously told Reuters that they could be part of a year-long cyber campaign waged by Iranian hackers against major U.S. financial institutions and other corporate entities.

Sen. Joseph Lieberman, chairman of the Senate's Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee, has also blamed Iran's much-improved cyber forces on the bank website outages.

A group that calls itself the Cyber Fighters of Izz ad-din Al Qassam has claimed credit for the recent bank attacks, declaring them a protest against the anti-Islam video posted on YouTube and stoked violent protests across the Muslim world.

The latest attacks against the banks have thrown as many as 30 million electronic packets per second at the websites, at times overwhelming both the banks and the additional technical resources being moved into place to counter the attacks.

That much volume "would overwhelm almost anyone, including large telecommunications companies," said Scott Hammack, chief executive of Prolexic Technologies, which specializes in warding off "denial of service" attacks. Prolexic's clients include several of the biggest banks, though Hammack declined to name which ones.

Experts said that high-volume denial-of-service attacks were becoming more common even before the latest bank assaults and would continue to increase in sophistication as well.

"This entire episode speaks to the need for banks, or any business operating online, to be prepared for this type of availability attack," said Dan Holden, director of research at security firm Arbor Networks.?

Travel Tuesday: London Heathrow the Spirits are Open

It is well to remember that there are five reasons for drinking: the arrival of a friend; one's present or future thirst; the excellence of the wine; or any other reason. ~ Latin saying

Having just recently?arrived back from a great trip to the United Kingdom, I had a few hours to kill in London's well known and famous Heathrow Airport. I would have to say my experience at Heathrow?was much better than what could only be called a CF, at Charles De Gaulle Airport in France. I've been through that airport?on more than one occasion and the "experience" if I can call it that is always the same, harrowing at best.

But laying that aside for another day, lets launch into a subject I know we all like, well at least most of us. Two topics really, one the ladies really love and that is shopping and one the guys really like, and that is getting your single malt on.

Yes, you heard me right shopping, tasting a varied selection of single malts combined with hours to wait before your flight is ready to board at the duty-free shop. All of this can be done at the Heathrow airport in?London, no longer will you be be bored while waiting to board. I was a bit flummoxed seeing so many different bottles of single malt open, just waiting for me to ask can I taste that?

Once I do ask, an emphatic "yes" is the answer to my silent prayers from the "guy" in doing the khaki-casual thing at the duty-free shop. I'm thinking well then bring it on, there were quite a few Single Malts, I've not had the opportunity to try before, so I dove in head first, making an amber colored splash and of course I found a few more favorites that I will want to add to my collection at some point in the future.

The Speyside distillery of 'The Balvenie' 15 year 'Golden Cask' [pictured above] was a very nice quaff, easy gentle spices, you could taste the homegrown barley, it had nutty sweetness, a puff of smoke, cinnamon spiciness and a delicately proportioned layer of Caribbean Rum. It's not high end, but one that is very approachable, especially to folks who don't get the peaty, smoky thing.

So whiskey isnt' your thing huh? You thought this was a wineblog, perhaps you were?wondering what the bleep is going here, with all this business about Scotch. Psssh, what-ever, hold on to?your lederhosen for just one minute, if you could please. I also discovered they had a few very high-end wines on tap in via a enomatic machine and they had some 1er Cru on tap [sorry to rhyme] oh-crap are you freaking kidding? Well they weren't and again all I had to do was ask nicely and the nice gentlemen poured me a couple ounces Burgundy Cru.

What more could you ask for, while waiting to board your plane? Well since you are asking for more, then how about walking?[now that would be something to see] a walk-in humidor? Hmmm, not bad huh? Want to try a sample, umm go ahead just ask, apparently, not being afraid to ask leads to all kinds of good things. Somewhat similar to that Zero Calories Coke commercial where the guy ask, "And?"?

I nearly made Mrs. Cuvee and I?miss our flight because I was getting so carried away, 'asking', sampling and all that I somehow had lost track of time like the proverbial kid in the candy store. But nonetheless it all worked out and a quick dash to the gate had us both boarding on time, albeit a little winded from the experience [and yes Mrs. Cuvee was more than a bit unhappy].?That is all I have for you today folks, until next time remember as always to sit back, relax and continue to sip long and prosper cheers!

green - phoenix | blog | easy as (vegan) pie - australian vegan ...

Photobucket texas ?moo-shroom? po-boy - ?pulled? and shredded portabella with caramelized onions and peppers slow cooked in espresso bbq sauce $8 (WITH SWEET POTATO GEMS) Photobucket spicy peanut tofu $4 Photobucket spicy buffalo ?wings ? vegan cucumber ranch and celery sticks $5 Photobucket jerk tofu salad - jerk spiced house tofu over fresh greens tossed in jamaican jungle dressing $9 (large)

The wild wild west that is Arizona isn't somewhere you'd automatically associate with vegan food but Phoenix, in particular, has a huge artist community and a very diverse population.

As mentioned yesterday Green is the comfort food sister to Nami. As you can see we came here a couple of times so I could attempt to eat my way through the menu. The po-boy was lovely with a pillowy soft bun and super rich mushroom filling. The off menu (SECRET) sweet potato gems (I DIE) were amazing. The spicy peanut tofu was actually pretty good. I didn't have high hopes, the tofu was super crispy with a creamy satay sauce.

The buffalo wings were too salty. And I mean I add salt to everything and I couldn't finish them. So wouldn't recommend them. Finally the jerk tofu salad was awesome. Light, crispy and filling - just what I needed after a few days of eating po-boys and tSoynami's.

Green really kills it with a good cross section of comfort food from pizza to sandwiches to bowls and a huge list of starters. It's not likely a lot of you will go to Phoenix but if you do Green an Nami are unreal.
