How The Africa Cup of Nations affects the Premier League and Football League - Group A review

Angola, Cape Verde, Morocco and hosts South Africa are in Group A of the African Cup of Nations and their involvement has either directly or indirectly affected teams such as Everton, Crystal Palace, Oldham Athletic, Norwich City, QPR, Arsenal, Liverpool, Aston Villa, Tottenham Hotspur and Wrexham.

Next year the African Nations Cup is once again in full flow as Zambia look to defend their title in South Africa. As always the competition will have an effect on global football as many stars players from the bigger leagues consider joining up with their countries in a bid to become kings of their home continent.

The Confederation of African Football has set the deadline for the submission of squads for January 9th; with the full list of 23-players being named by midnight. Any late submissions will see a substantial fine and the loss of a player from the list.

Some teams have announced their preliminary squads or training camp teams early but this of course doesn?t cater for the English League system whose continued lack of a winter break means most of the English based players will not be available until shortly before the competition starts on the 19th January.

But which Premier League and football league teams are going to win and lose from the Africa Cup of Nations?

Here is a country-by-country guide for Group A.

South Africa

Unless there is a dramatic U-turn from recent international retiree Everton midfielder Steven Pienaar the Premier League should remain largely unaffected by the host nation?s squad choices. Lower down the football pyramid however and Crystal Palace could be without midfield enforcer Kagisho Dikgacoi and Oldham Athletic could lose Dean Furman to the Bafana Bafana. Norwich City winger Andrew Surman is also eligible but has made his intentions clear that he will not play for the country of his birth.

Angola

No current Premier League interest however former Manchester United and Hull City striker Manucho will be looking to add to his impressive goal record for the Palancas Negras.

Morocco

Interestingly The Atlas Lions qualification could have had a bigger impact on the Premier League than is being felt.?Adel Taarabt is not selected for the squad; the?QPR player had given mixed signals as to whether he would accept a call-up, but there are others who have been.?Oussama Assaidi and Karim El Ahmadi of Liverpool and Aston Villa respectively are in, but?Maraoune Chamakh of Arsenal has also not been selected

Cape Verde

The shock qualifiers from the tiny archipelago nation do not have any current players who play in the UK. However their effect is still felt in the Premier League as they qualified at the expense of Cameroon. That means the likes of QPR defender Stephane M?Bia, Tottenham full-back Benoit Assou-Ekotto, Norwich defender Sebastian Bassong and Wrexham goalie Joslain Mayebi will not be lost at the turn of the year.

Who do you think loses out most from the 2013 African Cup of Nations?

Electronic Sports activities Nirvana as well as Olympics tend to be ...

It?s extremely situated in order to forge the profitable route via compensated high quality content material, interactive advertising as well as interpersonal advertising. However the Disney-owned sports activities huge is actually treading much more gently in to these types of areas compared to numerous anticipated.

Up to now, ESPN has had in order to center the actual well-publicized cases of press gamers who?ve sustained the actual wrath associated with it?s appreciation people once they attempted in order to wreck havoc on their own advertising, marketing, content material as well as interpersonal associations. Nevertheless, it?s much more essential than ever before with regard to businesses in order to discover as well as test potential customers with regard to addressable marketing as well as high quality spend content material. There?s a good financial bonanza inside someplace.

ESPN offers each and every cause to maneuver very carefully. ESPN adds $9. four million associated with Disney?s complete cable television system income associated with $12. four million, as well as $3. 6 million associated with Disney?s complete cable television system income associated with $4. 6 million within financial 2011, based on Morgan Stanley. televised privileges will probably get to be the very first, the majority of raucous scrimmage with regard to electronic content material. It might spend good looking returns within brand new electronic income in order to counteract the advised $4 million cost with regard to household telecast privileges from the 4 Olympics Video games, resources state.

For several years, NBC cast it?s Olympics telecasts right into a lucrative as well as exclusive proposal through strongly increasing the actual club through transmit in order to cable television in order to loading on the internet movie as well as cellular, exactly where presently there continues to be lots of fertile floor in order to discover. The actual extreme universality can make the actual Olympics a unique check situation within brand new electronic company versions in order to counter-top growing over-the-top TELEVISION as well as cord-cutting actually in the nation?s biggest cable television techniques owner.

Comcast might ambitiously places it?s Kayak Endeavors, TELEVISION Almost everywhere, Xfinity upon steroids along with other brand new functions to operate. Perhaps Comcast can consider twin possession associated with content material as well as submission in order to locations Period Warner would not proceed. For a long time, Comcast may be intention upon getting much more of the sports activities pressure to become believed along with upon local as well as nationwide amounts.

Simply because ESPN is actually distinctively situated to try electronic sports activities nirvana, Comcast might have to dedicate enormous amounts to keep NBC?s Olympics advantage. As the MSO obviously is actually purchasing NBCU because of its cable television system butt, amusement as well as information content material usually aren?t however powerful profitable membership as well as advertising ways of assistance wholesome brand new income flow.

Sports activities encoding privileges as well as ideals is only going to be complicated. Reside sports activities is within the actual fairly sweet place from the almost $29 million marketers are required to invest on the internet this season, even though video?s part remands under 10%, based on eMarketer. Sports activities includes just about all types of electronic content material as well as performance past reside perform ? through dream groups as well as game titles as well as replays, in order to loading information as well as information, smartphone applications, as well as specific items.

Quick modifications within the marketing as well as press scenery tend to be making client purchase problems which content material for example sports activities may permeate, based on JP Morgan?s voluminous ?Nothing Bu Net? statement. It is the 1 type of content material which adapts to any or all press products as well as systems, in a vocabulary.

The biggest and many essential income flow within the b-to-b industry would be the costs compensated through cable television as well as satellite television proprietors for that to make use of their own sports activities privileges along with other content material. Within the arriving many years, these types of affiliate marketer costs would have been a crucial car owner associated with field income along with a ongoing supply of antagonism in between content material proprietors as well as marketers.

However the introduction associated with brand new products as well as entry choices may deliver brand new types of ?affiliates. inch Simply because ESPN?s month-to-month affiliate marketers charge is actually this type of substantial outlier ? ESPN statements 20% from the affiliate marketer charge container along with just 5% from the watching target audience. Additional outliers consist of local sports activities systems such as INDEED will also be in the top finish associated with month-to-month affiliate marketer costs, based on a current statement through Nomura Investments analyzer Erina Nathanson. Period Warner?s TNT offers bolstered it?s general worth by having an NBA agreement with regard to normal period video games, All-StarWeekend as well as playoffs.

ESPN is actually including much more three dimensional choices as well as electronic interactive functions as well as support that may just appeal to customers as well as marketers. ESPN?s household sports activities expenses are required to improve through higher solitary numbers within 2011, that is greater than recently using its NATIONAL FOOTBALL LEAGUE, NBA, NASCAR as well as NCAA agreements secured within via financial 2013. The only real ?notable development exception? might be ALL OF US privileges towards the 2014 as well as 2016 Olympic Video games, Nathanson stated.

Based on MAGNA, the actual NATIONAL FOOTBALL LEAGUE offers a lot more than 25% ever invested watching sports activities using its privileges costs, symbolizing almost 1 / 2 of just about all complete nationwide tv bucks allocated to sports activities, or even more compared to $5 million. Each and every press describe within transmit as well as cable television, on the internet as well as within cellular, in publications as well as upon stereo is actually pressurized in order to develop methods to produce plenty brand new income in order to with each other much better counteract individuals expenses. ESPN may be settling the five-year, 5% price improve restoration for that privileges in order to Mon Evening Soccer.

ESPN?s cable television affiliate marketers may produce approximately $6. four million as well as marketing income associated with $2. 8 million within 2011 when compared with almost $300 zillion within on the internet as well as cellular earnings for any complete associated with $9. four million within financial 2011 income as well as $3. 6 million within income, based on Morgan Stanley. ESPN may hardly gather $325 zillion within on the internet as well as cellular income through 2015. That is horrible, provided the actual connection sports activities enthusiasts need to discovering a common groups, gamers as well as sports activities in most interactive method feasible.

In the event that Comcast or even every other cross-platform press huge may accomplish an electronic interactive sports activities coup, they might nick aside from ESPN?s general $60 million resource worth, composed of 1 / 2 of just about all Walt Disney Company. Because traditional press is constantly on the deliver in order to as well as intertwine using the so-called brand new electronic press, actually ESPN?s TELEVISION foundation will need shoring through brand new income resources as well as brand new affiliate marketers that will not end up being nearby TELEVISION channels, nationwide TELEVISION systems as well as cable television MSOs.

Plastic Surgeon Comments on Increased Demand for Breast ...

Ottawa, Canada, December 30, 2012 ?(PR.com)? Dr. Howard Silverman of Ottawa Plastic Surgery has seen a rise in the number of requests for breast augmentation in Ottawa. This reflects a similar trend in the U.S., as documented by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS).

Recently released statistics from the ASPS show a 4% increase in breast augmentation procedures in the United States from 2010 to 2011.

"I've been seeing more breast augmentation patients at my practice because of a number of factors," Dr. Silverman says. "I attribute the increase in Ottawa, and elsewhere, partially to advancements in breast implant options and surgical techniques, which are creating more personalized results."

Dr. Silverman uses the latest in breast implant surgical techniques and offers his patients the newest in highly cohesive round gel implants, the INSPIRA? line, which is part of Allergan's NATRELLE? collection.

"One of the best ways to achieve beautiful and natural-looking results is to offer the latest cosmetic procedures and products available," Dr. Silverman says. "This holds true not only for breast augmentation. Patients considering procedures such as a tummy tuck in Ottawa are also discovering how new techniques can bring their cosmetic goals within reach.

In January, Dr. Silverman attended the ALLERGAN ACADEMY? as part of his continued dedication to providing his patients with the latest advances and optimal care.

"The ALLERGAN ACADEMY was an excellent opportunity for me to further my knowledge of current trends," Dr. Silverman says. "I was able not only to share my experiences with other doctors but also to hear from prominent national and international speakers."

Dr. Silverman also recently travelled to Sweden to observe renowned Swedish plastic surgeon Dr. Charles Randquist, as part of Allergan's initiative to advance breast augmentation skills for top surgeons utilizing their devices.

"Whether a patient is interested in a breast enhancement procedure such as breast augmentation or body contouring after weight loss in Ottawa, it is exciting to see how numerous new advancements are helping people look and feel their best," Dr. Silverman says.

Tech in 2012: Microsoft Disrupts BYOD, Lenovo Has the Right Mobile/PC Strategy

SiliconAngle news editor Kristen Nicole wraps up her three-part recap on the top consumer trends in 2012 with a discussion about mobile, including notable product launches and other big plays by leading vendors (full video below).

Kristen tackles Microsoft Surface first. She says that while the tablet may not have lived up to the more enthusiastic pre-launch sales expectations, the device is playing a key role in disrupting the BYOD space.? One of the main reasons companies resort to implementing pricey corporate network management solutions is because Apple?s restrictive ecosystem makes iPhones and iPads difficult to manage from a security and compliance standpoint, but this is not the case with Windows 8.

Worms turn metal into semiconductors

12 hrs.

Worms are useful in the garden and great for fish bait, but one of their talents has remained hidden ? until now. Scientists have discovered that worms can manufacture tiny semiconductors. ?

At King's College in London, researchers fed an ordinary red worm, Lumbricus rubellus, soil laced with metals. The worm produced quantum dots, nano-sized semiconductors that are used in imaging, LED technologies and solar cells. The experiment was published in the Dec. 23 issue of the journal Nature Nanotechnology.

The worms created these electronic components because of their ability to detoxify their body tissue. When worms ingest the metals, proteins in their body shuttle these "toxins" to tissues called chloragogen cells that are similar to a liver in mammals. In the case of?cadmium, a molecule called?metallothionein attaches to it to take it away.?Through several chemical steps the worm separates the metals from the organic molecules they are attached to and stores them in tiny cavities its body, but not forever: eventually whatever toxic metals the worm eats are excreted.?

Squirmy semiconductor factories
In the experiment the scientists spiked soil with cadmium chloride and sodium tellurite (sodium, telluride and oxygen). The ability of worms to process cadmium is well known, but it wasn't clear what they would do with the tellurium in the sodium tellurite.

The worms ended up making tiny particles of cadmium telluride, a crystalline compound that is also a semiconductor. Those tiny particles ? called quantum dots ? were then taken out of the worms' tissue. The dots themselves are only nanometers across. [Twisted Physics: 7 Mind-Bending Findings]

In biological imaging, quantum dots are used in place of dyes because they can be "tuned" to glow at specific wavelengths. Cadmium telluride dots, for example, glow green when hit with blue light. The researchers tested the dots on animal cells and found they worked as well as the ones created in laboratories.

The success doesn't mean that thousands of worms are to be sacrificed for dot-making, said co-author Mark Green, a reader in nanotechnology at King's College.

"The interesting bit is that semiconductor quantum dots, which emit light, were made in a living animal," he told Livescience via email. "The aim of the work wasn?t to come up with a new synthetic process of making dots that are better than bench-synthesized materials, it was just to see if we could do solid-state chemistry in a living animal ? and it appears we can!"

A dotty idea
Green said the idea occurred to him several years back when he was an Oxford University post-doctoral researcher. He heard a lecturer note that animals use certain proteins to get rid of toxic metals such as cadmium. Green realized he was doing something similar to make cadmium telluride quantum dots in the lab, sans worms.

He wondered if some extra chemical might spur worms to make their own cadmium telluride quantum dots.

"The big problem," he said, "was that I didn't know enough biology, and I could see immediately that trying to get the dots out of an animal would be a problem."

So Green shelved the idea for a few years, until he met Stephen St?rzenbaum, the lead author of the paper. St?rzenbaum told Green that he knew exactly where cadmium given to worms went: to the detoxifying chloragogen cells. Since the cadmium ? and thus the nanoscale dots ? would end up there, it would be relatively easy to get them out of the worm.

So they tried it. It worked.

"We were very surprised, didn't really expect it to work that easily," Green said.

The quantum dots Green and his team made aren't quite the quality of the lab-bench versions. That may change, though. "We'd like to think we can play around with some of the chemistry and make them better," Green said.

Rock legends put on 6-hour Sandy benefit show

    By Anna Chan, TODAY

Updated at 1:25 a.m. ET: On Wednesday night, rock legends ranging from Roger Waters (formerly of Pink Floyd) to The Rolling Stones to Paul McCartney to Eddie Vedder and many more joined together to put on a massive six-hour concert to raise money for the Robin Hood Relief Fund benefiting victims of Superstorm Sandy.

    Larry Busacca / Getty Images

Bruce Springsteen and the E Street band kicked off the concert with "Land of Hope and Dreams," and followed it up with "Wrecking Ball."?

"Tonight, this is a prayer for all of our struggling brothers and sisters," Springsteen said. After performing a third song, the rocker brought out Jon Bon Jovi, and the pair sang "Born to Run" together.

"I can't believe that Bruce Springsteen is my opening act," Billy Crystal joked after the set. "You can feel the electricity in the building, which means Long Island Power isn't involved." He also reminded viewers about the devastation the storm left behind. "More than 100 people died ... entire neighborhoods wiped out. ... Tonight with your help, we are going to emerge stronger than before."

Pink Floyd's Roger Waters, who recently toured with his show "Roger Waters The Wall Live," performed "In the Flesh" and "Another Brick in the Wall" from the band's classic album. He then launched into "Money" and "Us and Them" from "Dark Side of the Moon."?

Pearl Jam's Eddie Vedder then joined the group for "Comfortably Numb," taking turns on the lyrics with Waters.?

Don Emmert / AFP - Getty Images

Roger Waters performed songs from "The Wall" and "Dark Side of the Moon."

Adam Sandler then took the stage with Paul Shaffer on piano for a little fun, with the comedian tweaking the lyrics to "Hallelujah" to suit the evening. "Hallelujah, Sandy screw ya! We'll get through you, 'cause we're New Yorkers!"?the duo sang.

During the show, celebrities -- including Susan Sarandon,?Ben Stiller and?Jake Gyllenhaal?-- manned the phone bank to handle call-in donations. There were so many stars there to help, "You can't swing a dead cat without hitting a celebrity," Brian Williams joked during the concert.

"Twilight" star Kristen Stewart also made an appearance to urge viewers to donate. She reminded the audience of the massive amount of damage that the storm left behind. "Now is your chance to be Jersey Strong with us," she said before introducing Bon Jovi's performance.?The Jersey native kicked off his set with "It's My Life."?

"When this storm hit, we all knew that the healing process would be beginning, but that it was going to take a long time," the rocker said. "(The performers) knew the people we were doing it for wouldn't be able to hear us, to see us. ... This recovery is not going to be quick. ... But we are strong. We are New York. We are New Jersey."

    Larry Busacca / Getty Images

Jon Bon Jovi performed "Livin' on a Prayer" and other hits during his set.

Eric Clapton also delivered an energetic set of his own that included "Nobody Knows When You're Down and Out" and "Crossroad Blues."

He was followed by The Rolling Stones, who were introduced by Jimmy Fallon. Frontman Mick Jagger encouraged the crowd to dance and cheer as the band launched into "You Got Me Rocking" and the singer showed off his own slinky moves.

"This has got to be the largest collection of old English musicians ever assembled in Madison Square Garden," Jagger later joked of the night's lineup.

Don Emmert / AFP - Getty Images

Ronnie Wood, Mick Jagger and Charlie Watts of The Rolling Stones perform.

Comedian Stephen Colbert also added to the humor. He said that when Sir Paul McCartney asked him for advice on being cool, he told the musician to lose the hair cut and the accent. Colbert then pointed out that helping is also cool. So cool, in fact, that it's like "doing a line of uncut goodwill" and that donating "is the new skinny jeans."

New Yorker Alicia Keys later delivered an emotion-packed performance, first with new tune "Brand New Me" then "No One." After the two-song set, she said, "My city, New York City, is the most resilient city."

After the slower set, The Who kicked things back into high gear with an energetic performance of "Who Are You?" during which singer Roger Daltrey seemingly dropped an F-bomb. While performing "Bell Boy," the band showed video of drummer Keith Moon, who died in 1978. Images and videos switched to those of the storm's destruction during "See Me, Feel Me." They ended their long set with "Tea and Theater" and a loud expletive for beer instead.?

Lenovo announces the ThinkPad X1 Carbon Touch, available now for $1,399 and up

We can't say we're surprised by this news, seeing as how Lenovo leaked it on its own site three weeks ago. Still, it's nice to get official confirmation, isn't it? Like we told you, Lenovo is releasing a touchscreen version of the ThinkPad X1 Carbon Ultrabook, appropriately called the X1 Carbon Touch. And, as expected, it's on sale this month. Today, actually, starting at $1,399 -- a $150 premium over the non-touch model. Like the regular X1 Carbon, it has a 14-inch, 1,600 x 900 screen, a carbon fiber chassis, an Ivy Bridge chipset, built-in 3G and a backlit ThinkPad keyboard, complete with that signature red pointing stick.

The main difference is that the touchscreen makes this a bit thicker and heavier (20.8mm and "less than" 3.5 pounds, versus three pounds and 18mm thick for the non-touch model). Even then, 3.4 pounds is still lighter than some 13-inch Ultrabooks we've seen. In fact, Lenovo is billing it as the world's lightest 14-inch Ultrabook, though we all know how short-lived such distinctions are. As for battery life, Lenovo rates this for 8.2 hours of runtime. If true, that would be very good news indeed, given that we've yet to test a touchscreen Ultrabook with decent battery life.

Taking it Home for November 25 Youth Class: Thinking of Death ...

    ?

The question is not whether we will die but how we have lived.

    ? Joan Borysenko, psychologist

Talk about the quote. What does it mean to you?

    WHAT WE DID TODAY

Today?s Big Question was ?What happens when you die?? We talked about some different answers to the question which come from a variety of belief systems. We heard what a Unitarian Universalist minister said when he had cancer and expected to die soon. We found out that UUs talk more about heaven- and hell-like situations on Earth and what to do about them, than we talk about an afterlife. That is because many UUs believe we live on after life through what we did when we were alive?as well as in the memories of our families and friends. We also explored rituals to memorialize people after they die.

    ANSWERING TODAY?S BIG QUESTION

What do family members have to say about the question: ?What happens when we die??

What does your family do so relatives who have died live on, through you?

    VISIT THE DEAD

Go to a cemetery and look at the gravestones. What can you learn from them? Do those messages help the people buried there live on? Are there flowers and mementos? Why do people put them there?

    SHARED SEARCH

Go through a family photo album or ?family tree.? Choose somebody you know little about who has died. Find out as much as you can about that person so they can live on through you.

    REFLECT ON YOUR BELIEFS

Ask another big question: Is anything worth dying for? Patrick Henry was a famous patriot who said, ?Give me Liberty or Give me Death.? Was he right? What do you think is worth dying for?

    PHOTO CHALLENGE

Photograph a cycle of life and death. You might start with a seed, photograph a flower as it grows through the summer, and photograph it again when it dies in a frost. You might photograph spring buds and then beautiful dying leaves.

    FIND OUT MORE

Bereaved Children: A Support Guide for Parents and Professionals by Earl A.Grollman (Beacon, 1996) offers insight into how children and adolescents experience death and grieving and how adults can help them through such experiences. The book presents ways children and adults might bring various faith perspectives to the subject of death.

ADHD linked to oxygen deprivation before birth

Dec. 10, 2012 ? Children who had in-utero exposure to ischemic-hypoxic conditions, situations during which the brain is deprived of oxygen, were significantly more likely to develop attention deficit hyperactivity disorder later in life as compared to unexposed children, according to a Kaiser Permanente study published in the journal Pediatrics. The findings suggest that events in pregnancy may contribute to the occurrence of ADHD over and above well-known familial and genetic influences of the disorder.

The population-based study examines the association between IHC and ADHD. Researchers examined the electronic health records of nearly 82,000 children ages 5 years old and found that prenatal exposure to IHC -- especially birth asphyxia, neonatal respiratory distress syndrome, and preeclampsia -- was associated with a 16 percent greater risk of developing ADHD. Specifically, exposure to birth asphyxia was associated with a 26 percent greater risk of developing ADHD, exposure to neonatal respiratory distress syndrome was associated with a 47 percent greater risk, and exposure to preeclampsia (high blood pressure during pregnancy) was associated with a 34 percent greater risk. The study also found that the increased risk of ADHD remained the same across all race and ethnicity groups.

"Previous studies have found that hypoxic injury during fetal development leads to significant structural and functional brain injuries in the offspring," said study lead author Darios Getahun, MD, PhD, of the Kaiser Permanente Southern California Department of Research & Evaluation. "However, this study suggests that the adverse effect of hypoxia and ischemia on prenatal brain development may lead to functional problems, including ADHD."

Researchers also found that the association between IHC and ADHD was strongest in preterm births and that deliveries that were breech, transverse (shoulder-first) or had cord complications were found to be associated with a 13 percent increased risk of ADHD. These associations were found to be the case even after controlling for gestational age and other potential risk factors.

"Our findings could have important clinical implications. They could help physicians identify newborns at-risk that could benefit from surveillance and early diagnosis, when treatment is more effective," said Getahun. "We suggest future research to focus on pre- and post-natal conditions and the associations with adverse outcomes, such as ADHD."

During critical periods of fetal organ development, IHC may result in a lack of oxygen and nutrient transport from the mother's blood to fetal circulation. The result may be compromised oxygen delivery to tissues and cerebrovascular complications. However, this study suggests that the adverse effect of hypoxia on prenatal brain development may lead to functional problems, including ADHD.

In 2005, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimated the annual cost of ADHD-related illness in children under 18 years of age to be between $36 billion and $52.4 billion, making the condition a public health priority. In 2010, approximately 8.4 percent of children ages 3 to 17 had been diagnosed with ADHD. For about half the affected children, the disease persists into adulthood, according to CDC statistics. Symptoms of ADHD in children may include attention problems, acting without thinking, or an overly active temperament.

(AP) ? U.S. stock futures are rising in anticipation that the Federal Reserve will announce new measures to ramp up the U.S. economy.

Dow Jones industrial futures are up 28 points to 13,215. The broader S&P futures have added 2.7 points to 1,422.90. Nasdaq futures are up 5.5 points to 2,656.

Many expect the Fed to initiate a new bond-buying plan at the end of its two-day meeting Wednesday, hoping to tempt companies and individuals to borrow through low interest rates. The current program expires this year.

Also Tuesday, the Treasury Department says it is selling the last of its shares of American International Group Inc., moving closer to wrapping up the government's biggest bailout of the 2008 financial crisis.

The Treasury has received $22.7 billion more than the $182 billion it provided AIG.

Barnes & Noble brings Nook Video to the UK, first to offer UltraViolet in the old country

Barnes & Noble have kept its "early December" promise to bring the Nook Video service to the UK. The company has signed deals with heavy-hitters like the BBC, HBO and Warner Bros., so Game of Thrones and The Dark Knight Rises are ready and gagging to be seen. It's also the first to arrive in Blighty with full-fat UltraViolet access, enabling you to watch your (compatible) purchased DVDs and Blu-Rays without all of that fiddly ripping and re-encoding. If you haven't snapped up one of the company's Nook HD tablets yet, you'd better get writing that letter to Santa.

Ghana's Mahama wins election, opposition cries foul

ACCRA (Reuters) - Ghana's electoral authorities said on Sunday incumbent leader John Dramani Mahama won a new term as president in the West African state in an election the opposition claimed was marred by tampering.

Mahama, who replaced former president John Atta Mills after his death in July, took 50.7 percent of the ballots cast - just enough to avoid a run-off with his chief rival Nana Akufo-Addo.

"Based on the results, I declare President John Dramani Mahama president elect," Ghana Electoral Commission President Kwadwo Afari-Gyan told a news conference in the capital Accra.

In a brief speech at his residence following the results, an exhausted-looking Mahama said his win was a "victory for all Ghanaians", and urged the leaders of rival parties to "respect the voice of the people".

Supporters of Mahama drove through the streets of the sprawling seaside capital playing loud music, shouting, and honking their horns after the results.

The election is seen as a test of whether Ghana can maintain more than 30 years of stability and progress in a region better known for coups, civil wars and corruption.

A cliff-hanger election in 2008, in which Akufo-Addo lost by less than 1 percent, pushed the country to the brink of chaos, with disputes over results driving hundreds of people into the streets with clubs and machetes.

This year's election was fraught with delays after hundreds of newly-introduced electronic fingerprint readers - used to identify voters - failed on Friday and forced some polling stations to reopen on Saturday to clear the backlog.

Security forces used teargas to disperse hundreds of supporters of the Akufo-Addo's New Patriotic Party protesting in front of the electoral commission building shortly before the results were declared.

NPP Chairman Obetsebi-Lamptey said earlier in the day that he had evidence of electoral workers conspiring to rig tallies and added the party asked the electoral commission for an audit before full results are released.

Mahama has vowed to use rising oil revenues in Ghana, which started oil production in late 2010, to jumpstart development, create jobs, and combat poverty.

Akufo-Addo, a British-trained lawyer, had criticized the ruling party for failing to root out government graft and promised to provide free primary and secondary school education.

But in a country where campaign messages rarely influence voting choices, many believe most of Ghana's 14 million voters cast their ballots based on ethnic, social or regional ties.

Ghanaians are also electing a parliament, in which Mahama's party has enjoyed a slim majority. Results were not yet available for those races.

An oil-driven economic boom has brought more wealth to the country, but also fears that it could suffer the graft and turmoil that often plagues energy-rich developing nations.

    TROUBLED POLLS

An NPP official was not immediately available to comment on the results, but observers said an official dispute was likely, raising fears of street unrest in the normally tranquil nation.

Ghana television stations aired long infomercials on Sunday, between election updates, showing clips of wars that have erupted in neighboring countries interspersed with testimonials from Ghanaians about the importance of maintaining peace.

"This election has been hard, but we must remember Ghanaians are one and we must love each other and remain peaceful," said Wellington Dadzie, 69, a former soldier who lives on the outskirts of the capital Accra, before the results.

Ghanaian authorities deployed some 41,000 police and soldiers to secure the election process.

Ghana has had five peaceful and constitutional transfers of power since its last coup in 1981. Its residents like to say "Ghana in peace, not in pieces".

Neighboring Ivory Coast tipped into civil war last year after a disputed 2010 poll and regional neighbors Mali and Guinea-Bissau have both suffered coups this year.

Oil production in Ghana - which is also a big cocoa and gold producer - started two years ago and oil field operator Tullow Oil says it expects to boost output further in 2013.

"These elections are important not just to Ghana but for the growing number of states and actors seeking to benefit from increasing confidence in Africa," said Alex Vines, Africa Research Director at Chatham House.

North Korea says it may change rocket launch window

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) ? North Korea said Sunday that scientists are "seriously examining" the possibility of changing a launch window for a rocket the country had planned to fire sometime after Monday.

The short statement by an unnamed spokesman for the North's Korean Committee of Space Technology provided few details. Recent satellite images have indicated that snow may have slowed preparations, but analysts believed Pyongyang could still be ready for liftoff starting Monday.

The North's statement, carried by the official Korean Central News Agency, said scientists are making preparations for the launch of what North Korea calls a peaceful satellite but "are now seriously examining the issue of readjusting the launching time of the satellite for some reasons."

It didn't elaborate. The previously announced launch window runs from Monday to Dec. 22.

The United Nations, Washington, Seoul and others call the launch a cover for a test of technology for a missile that could be used to target the United States.

North Korea's launch preparations have been magnified as an issue because of their timing: Both Japan and South Korea hold elections this month, and President Barack Obama will be inaugurated for his second term in office in January.

North Korea's launch window comes as its people mark the Dec. 17 death of leader Kim Jong Un's father, Kim Jong Il. North Korea is also celebrating the centennial of the birth of Kim Jong Un's grandfather, national founder Kim Il Sung.

North Korea has a long history of developing ballistic missiles, but in four attempts since 1998 it has not successfully completed the launch of a three-stage rocket. It has also conducted two nuclear tests, intensifying worry over how its rocket technology could be used in the future, particularly if it masters attaching a nuclear warhead to a missile.

A North Korean rocket in April broke apart shortly after liftoff but the launch was condemned by the U.N.

Christmas shopping: Tips to prevent a financial holiday hangover ...

Holiday hangover can aptly describe January?s financial woes. First comes the euphoria, then comes the sobering reality that you must pay for your indulgence, and it will hurt.

According to a recent RBC Canadian Consumer Outlook Index survey, Canadians plan to spend an average of $629 on gifts this year. More than half plan to fund their festivities with savings, 24% plan to use credit cards and 23% admit to not having thought about how they?ll pay.

Financial experts warn that emotional spending during the holidays can push you over your financial limits, but a proper plan can prevent the hangover.

?If you?re going to pay by credit card, don?t carry a balance,? advises Perry Quinton, vice-president of the Investor Education Fund. ?Just don?t take that hit in the middle of January because RRSP season is coming up and you?re going to need money to put aside into savings.?

Here are some strategies to help you emerge from the holidays financially merrier:

Make a list and check it twice? List everyone you plan to buy for and re-examine the list with the unforgiving eye of a discerning bouncer. See who you can exclude from the lineup. For example, Interac Association commissioned a survey and found that one of four Canadians plan to buy for their pets and more than one-third will buy gifts for themselves. Something to consider: Do you and your cat, Shadow, really need those matching sweaters?

When did gifts mean love?? Love means love. And chances are, your loved one won?t like the gift anyway. (Almost 80% of Canadians surveyed by RBC have gotten gifts they don?t like.) So give something else: Give the gift of time. Instead of buying presents, go for brunch with your gang or go on an excursion with the family. If you want to give the gift of giving, consider charity: The Western Union Holiday Gifting Index says 87% of Canadian consumers would trade one of their holiday gifts to make someone else happy. So send your father a card with this note: ?In lieu of your regular gift of socks and ties, I have made a donation to [insert charity of choice].?

Earn more cash and save it? Make some sacrifices: Cut out your salted caramel mocha for the month of December or temporarily cut back on premium cable. You could also pick up some extra work. Retailers are expected to hire thousands of seasonal workers over the holidays. For some extra cash, try selling your husband?s storm trooper costume on Kijiji.

Set a budget and stick to it? Easier said than done, I know. Only 27% of Canadians claim to track holiday spending to keep their budgets under control, according to the Consolidated Credit Counseling Services of Canada and one in three Canadians admit they purchase gifts they cannot afford; on average, those who overspent during the holidays went $467 over budget. So how to stay within budget? Go shopping when you?re well-fed and in a good mood because your willpower will be stronger. Also don?t be fooled by the word ?sale.? Do prior research; studies show that items sold on ?sale? can be as much as 57% more expensive than normal. Finally, shop early: 70% of Canadian shoppers reported waiting until the last minute to shop, according to the study for Western Union, and desperation does not fuel good choices.

Look for coupons!? No time for scissors and clippings? Jeff Schwartz, executive director of the Consolidated Credit Counseling Services says there are a myriad of websites out there for your financial benefit including: MrsJanuary.com or RedFlagDeals.com or RetailMeNot.com.

Get creative? If you have a large family, organize a gift exchange to reduce the number of gifts you need to buy. Sites such as Elfster.com help organize and assign names for a round of Secret Santa so there is no gift rigging. Better yet, play the white elephant gift exchange/Yankee Swap and infuriate your in-laws by stealing their Tim Hortons gift card.

Leave the credit card at home? One of the best ways to stick to your budget is use cash. There is a pain associated with forking over your hard-earned money and once it runs out, it should serve as a cue to cease and desist on the shopping. That being said, if you do use your credit card, pay it off on time. Use a credit card debt calculator to determine how long it will take to pay off the holiday balances. (Say you used your credit card to buy your wife hockey skates on sale for $350. With 19% annual interest and $50 monthly installments, you?d pay off the debt in eight months. The skates would then have cost you about $400 or 20% more than the original price.)

Don?t let great distance equal great spending? Fifty-six per cent of Canadian consumers will not be able to see all of their loved ones this holiday season and long-distance gift giving can affect your budget (63% exceeded their holiday budgets last year, according to the Western Union Holiday Gifting Index 2012 Survey). Send your loved ones cash, or shop online and get free shipping directly to their homes.

Enlist a shopping Scrooge, I mean, encouraging helper? Joseph Grenny, co-author of Crucial Conversations, found in his research that 74% of people struggle to discuss holiday spending with their spouse (23% even resort to hiding price tags). Speak to your spouse early about spending limits and hold each other accountable; otherwise, find a friend and make a pact to stick to a budget.

Food Fridays: The Best Holiday Teas in London ? Intelligent Travel

Nothing bad can happen at afternoon tea.?On the occasional dreadful day when everything seems to be going wrong, I head straight for the teapot to sort out any problems. After sipping a cuppa and nibbling on flaky scones and lemon-drizzled cakes, even the biggest grumps have no choice but to emerge cheerful.

In a lovely book I recently read,?The Regal Rules for Girls, American-Anglophile-turned-London-local?Jerramy Fine?examines the role tea plays in her adopted homeland. ?In England, tea has endless magical qualities and is genuinely believed to solve everything,? she writes.? Your boyfriend breaks up with you? Tea. Come down with the flu? Tea. Terrorist attack on the London Underground? Tea.?

The time-honored tradition can be traced to England?s Anna Maria Russell, a Duchess of Bedford and friend to Queen Victoria, who understandably became ravenous before late-night dinners. By the turn of the 20th century, stylish hotels and department stores began serving?afternoon tea, and tiny tea shops started popping up about town.

The ritual?retains its reputation as a ladies? escape, but, with a welcoming fireplace, deep-seated leather chairs, and cozy sofas, it?s hard for anyone to disagree with American novelist Henry James who said, ?There are few hours in life more agreeable than the hour dedicated to the ceremony known as afternoon tea.?

It?s popular in America now, especially in cities with grand hotels, but there is no place for tea like London ? especially during the holidays, when hotels and stores are decked out with thousands of lights, towering trees, and garlands of evergreen and pinecones.

Here are five of the best places to sit and sip and take in the holiday spirit:

Cozy up at the Savoy. (Photograph courtesy The Savoy)

1.?The Savoy in London has been serving afternoon tea for more than 100 years, and nowadays nearly everything they serve ? from scones to chocolates ? is made in-house. After closing for a massive multi-million-dollar restoration, the hotel reopened in 2010 but kept historical elements like the Thames Foyer?and a distinctive gazebo centerpiece.

While their afternoon tea is top-notch year round (and accompanied by live piano music), the hotel will be serving a special Christmas Carols Afternoon Tea on the weekends for the entire month of December, complete with cranberry scones, egg-nog eclairs, stollen (fruit cake), and live singers belting out holiday classics.

    2. Teeming with English hospitality, The Lanesborough serves a Festive Afternoon Tea?with strawberries and a glass of champagne. But the real treat comes in the form of?Karl Kessab,?the U.K.?s first-ever tea sommelier,?who recommends Darjeeling,?which pairs well with pastries,?for the?novice tea drinker.

But the holidays bring other surprises. Kessab says the hotel adds?mince pies and The Lanesborough special Christmas blend (a Ceylon-based tea with sweet roasted almonds and cinnamon) for some festive flair. When I asked him what he likes most about his job, he was quick to reply: ?guiding people through the complexities of teas [and] following rituals of proper English etiquette.?

3.?The Soho Hotel will serve up cranberry and orange-spiced treats along with the traditional mince pies?at its Winter Afternoon Tea?? a?reasonably priced alternative to the higher-end hotels, and in the heart of London.?Have your pick: tea can be taken in the Refuel Restaurant, the?Drawing Room, or the Library, each comfortable and whimsical in its own way. But wherever you sit, I recommend adding one of their delicious Bellinis, my favorite drink, to your tea service.

4.?The Wolseley?isn?t a hotel, but it?s grand. The London cafe, housed in a former car showroom turned bank on?Piccadilly, has a beautiful interior (one of the best in the city) that provides the perfect backdrop for a December afternoon tea. It?s also about half the price of a hotel?s full afternoon tea, without scrimping on any of the grandeur.

    5. For a more contemporary experience, try?Metropolitan by COMO?near all the holiday cheer in Mayfair. They offer a Winter Warmer Afternoon Tea, with savory delights like warm figs topped with stilton and a cranberry jelly roll. I love the gingerbread cupcakes served with rum cream, and of course, the egg nog. Tea is served in the super sleek Met Bar, which was originally members-only.

    Share the Love

If you love tea, you can?t leave London without bringing some home to share.

You could?head to?Harrod?s enormous food hall, but I prefer?A. Gold?in?the Spitalfields area of London. The?picture-perfect shop?sells traditional British foods, including nostalgic brands of tea that are difficult to find elsewhere ? like?Williamson, one of the last family-owned companies to own and operate their own tea plantation, and?Butterworth & Son.

Head to A. Gold for classic tea-time gifts. (Photograph by Ana Maria)

To make gift-giving easy, try the Suffolk Special Blend, which includes a picture card inside each tea packet ? a practice that was once commonplace among tea manufacturers ? or pick up some much-loved Campbell?s Perfect Tea?in its iconic yellow tin.

Don?t forget about teapots! You can pick up the classic Brown Betty?variety, made in Staffordshire in Northern England,?at the A. Gold shop as well. Tea aficionados say the shape makes for a superior brew. As Jerramy Fine says:??When in doubt, put the kettle on.?
