Book Review: Green Eyed Demon by Jaye Wells | DangerousRomance.com

Green Eyed Demon

Things to do:

1. Rescue sister.
2. Murder grandmother.
3. Don?t upset the voodoo priestess.

The clock is ticking for Sabina Kane. Her sister has been kidnapped by her grandmother, the Dark Races are on the brink of war, and a mysterious order is manipulating everyone behind the scenes.

Working on information provided by an unlikely ally, Sabina and her trusty sidekicks?a sexy mage named Adam Lazarus and Giguhl, a Mischief demon?head to New Orleans to begin the hunt for her sister. Once there, they must contend with belligerent werewolves, magic-wielding vampires and?perhaps most frightening of all?humans.

But as much as Sabina is focused on surviving the present, the past won?t be ignored. Before she can save those she cares about most, she must save herself from the ghosts of her past.

Book three of the Sabina Kane series took off right after book two, Mage in Black ends. Half Vampire/Half Mage Sabina, her minion and all around best friend and personal assistant Giguhl, and Adam the Mage take off in search of Sabina?s twin sister Maisie who has been kidnapped by their evil Grandmother, the head of the Vampires.

Before I go any further I have to say, one thing I think is really clever about this series is how Welles went for a switch up on the evil villain. We?ve all read books where the father is evil, a few where the mother was, but an Evil grandmother? That is such a great twist. Nobody thinks of Nanna as being evil. Of course Sabina?s Grandmother isn?t like anybody?s Nanna. She is a power mad, vicious uber villainess. She and Dr. Evil could go on a date.

Sabina and crew take on the big easy in an attempt to find Maisie, and in doing so team up with or bump up against some great new characters who add all kinds of fun to the mix. They meet a voodoo priestess, a Fairy who is a transvestite and performs at a drag club, werewolves, and a rock band of sexual deviants who also happen to be up to their guitar straps in magical abilities. The problem is, somebody is a traitor and they have to figure out who is trying to kill them, and who they can trust while trying to save Maisie.

I enjoyed this book so much more then Mage in Black. I think one reason Green Eyed Demon worked more for me was there was more team action, less of Sabina going it alone and in her thoughts to much. She?s still beating herself up internally, still impulsive and a bit abrasive but she?s also surrounded by such a great cast of characters it lightened all the drama up and Welles can write some fabulous snark. She had me laughing out loud on more then one occasion. More Giguhl and more Adam are a very good thing, and few writers in Urban Fantasy can write action as vividly as Welles can.
