Antique Cars, the next generation. | Auto Styles

September 1, 2011 ? 6:04 PM

For the past few years Automotive Styles has dedicated its self to showcasing car culture and cars from nearly all perspectives. Time Attack, Drfting, Import Tuning, Euro Tuning, American Muscle, Customs from the 1950s, Hot Rods, Concours d?Elegance, shop builds, and even our very own project car.

One of the major things we want our readers to know is how the next generation is keeping the auto industry alive in all major enthusiast arenas. That brings us to Woodies and Wheels in San Jose, CA. I met the owner and master craftsman while covering the Pebble Beach Concours d?Elegance. Matt has to be one of the most knowledgeable individuals I have ever met in the area of antique/classic cars and boats. First impressions of Matt were more than I could possibly comprehend. I met him at the Mecum Auction?tent next to his magnificently restored 1938 19 foot Chirs-Craft race boat, named the Phantasy 2. A quick walk around the boat I knew I was in the presence of someone that would set the standard for the next generation to rely upon for unmatched restoration and preservation projects. Did we mention Matt is only in his late 20?s? The next generation is beginning to take a firm grasp in preserving history. Matt?s shop is living proof.

After a few beers and touring the grounds of the Pebble Beach Concours Sunday Show, Automotive Styles was invited to pay a visit to his shop in San Jose after the show. Since we weren?t in a huge rush to get back to Los Angeles, I accepted and paid a visit the next day.

Greeting me as I walked in the door was the polished boat tail of a Haul-Scott. Around the corner was a early 19oos Packard bigger than any modern SUV I have ever seen. Seating for potentially 15. The Pistons alone, from the disassembled block, were the size of John Henry?s steak driving hammer. On an engine stand near by glistened the copper head gasket of the Packards intake manifold.

As I made my way around the shop, history oozed from nearly every square foot. Antique boat props, another Chris-Craft on a lift, an antique frame stored away, then BAM! The Hall-Scott. This polished beast eagerly wanted to tell me its story. This hand crafted, riveted panel, monster engine, gasoline fire breathing machine was everything a small boy dreams about when it comes to a fantasy vehicle of his/her choosing. Extended proportions of the boat tail, large racing numbers, and an engine to pull you through nearly any sticky situation. Not to mention a fashionable set of goggles to keep the bugs out of your eyes. The Hall-Scott was torn down to its rolling chassis to rebuild some elements of the engine, which had recently experienced some misfortune. No doubt Automotive Styles would have to come back to experience this beautiful piece of metal in its finest moment?on the road.

Nestled away near the Hall-Scott was a boat tail Model-T speedster dubbed the Black Widow. Expect a full report on the restoration of these cars, and many more from the Woodies and Wheels team. After our visit it?s going to be an amazing year of collaboration with this amazing shop. ENJOY and thank you Matt.
