Mexican national water authority Conagua plans to spend some 2.6bn pesos (US$220mn)on a dam and pipeline on the Atoyac and Salado rivers in Oaxaca state.

Work will be carried out as part of a water sustainability program in the southern state, the authority said in a release.

The program also includes building a 30km road along the banks of the Atoyac and Salado rivers. The 2bn-peso project aims to recover both river beds and improve road infrastructure, and will reduce the risk of flooding in the area, said Conagua director Jos? Luis Luege.

The water authority will spend another 700mn pesos to improve potable water systems and wastewater treatment, including the reuse of wastewater in the industrial and agricultural sectors.

The new projects will increase water supply in state capital Oaxaca by up to 1,500l/s.
